Apple Mac abandons Intel chip

Release Date:2020-06-23

Apple Mac abandons Intel chip and uses its own Mac chip based on ARM architecture

In the early morning of June 23,  Apple held the global developer conference WWDC20 for the first time online.

Although compared to software, everyone still looks forward to the release of Apple's hardware, but at this WWDC conference, software is the protagonist.

At the conference, Apple updated iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. From the software blueprint of WWDC every year, developers and users can roughly see the trend and positioning of Apple's future products.

It is worth noting that last night, Apple's stock rose 2.62%, the company's market value reached 1.55 trillion US dollars, a new high.

  Apple Mac abandoned Intel chip

According to foreign media reports, Apple announced plans for self-developed chips at the WWDC 2020.

Apple announced that it plans to abandon the Intel chip in the new Mac computer and use its own Mac chip based on the ARM architecture in order to provide better performance at lower power consumption.

The company said that after using its own ARM-based chip, not only will the notebook computer performance be greatly improved, but also the power consumption will be significantly reduced compared to the Intel processor period.

Since 2005, Apple has cooperated with Intel to develop Mac processors. Apple's move may confirm that it will part ways with Intel, which will be a huge change for Intel and the entire computing industry.

Earlier, foreign media reported that Apple found through testing that there is a gap in performance between Mac computers based on ARM chips and Mac computers based on Intel chips, especially in graphics, artificial intelligence (AI), and battery life. Decided to give up Intel.

It is reported that this year's Global Developer Conference is scheduled to be held from June 22 to June 26. Out of concerns about the pandemic of the new coronavirus, this conference will be held for the first time this year in an online format, rather than holding a face-to-face event like in previous years. This is the first time Apple has held an online developer conference in 33 years.

In addition to announcing the self-developed chip plan, Apple also released a special version of the Mac mini called Developer Transition Kit at this WWDC. The Mac mini is equipped with the same A12Z processor and 16GB of RAM as the 2020 iPad Pro.

Apple said that future Mac computers will use chips designed by Apple. For the past 15 years, Apple has been using Intel chips in its Mac computers. Cook said it was a "giant leap" and that the chip being designed for the Mac could provide higher performance while saving power.

Apple currently uses its own chips on its iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV, and said that more than 2 billion chips have been sold so far. Macs with Apple’s own chips will be able to run iPhone and iPad software.

Cook said that Apple will launch the first batch of Mac computers with self-developed chips by the end of this year, with a planned transition period of about two years.
